NORTONS INC QUARTERLY REVIEW

A message from Anthony Norton, Managing Director: Just over 16 years ago, I left a very safe job at a major law firm in Johannesburg together with three other partners with a view to setting up a leading competition law boutique firm. Our timing wasn't perfect and the opening of the firm coincided with the 2008/9 recession. We weathered the storm and 16 years later have a firm that according to the GCR Top 100 has been in the top 100 competition law firms worldwide for the past 14 years. However, our ambitions didn't end there.

As time went on we realised that we could also create a firm that was a leader in administrative and constitutional law, as well as in white-collar crime and commercial litigation. It has been at times a difficult journey, but perseverance, determination and at times sheer bloody mindedness and an unswerving desire never to give up have helped us to create a firm which today is one of the leaders in all of these fields. The cases that we have been involved in over the last six months is testimony to this and they include the challenge to the Minister of Telecommunication’s decision to proclaim analogue switch off on 31 March 2025, which was successfully interdicted; acting on behalf of the Hospital Association of South Africa in relation to the challenge to the National Health Insurance legislation and acting for one of the bidders in respect of the fourth National Lottery licence in challenging various decisions of the Minister of Trade Industry and Competition. We have also sought to challenge a decision of the Competition Commission in respect of a merger approval which affects the entire newspaper industry and the proceedings are currently pending before the Competition Appeal Court and the Constitutional Court.

We have just published our quarterly review which provides some useful insights into some of the major work that we are currently busy with which is attached for anyone who would like to read it. With the right team (we have a fantastic team of lawyers and economists, which has been the backbone of everything we have achieved), anything is possible, one needs to have the determination and ambition to make things happen!
